NOTPLA

Notpla - Disappearing Packaging - Seaweed-coated food containers

Plastic pollution has become one of the biggest threats to our environment and our future. Since so much of it is created by the packaging industry, Notpla realised there is a way of tackling the problem head-on: by creating next generation packaging solutions that can transform the industry.

How? By harnessing the power of nature. They’ve been designing alternative packaging solutions that contribute to restoring planetary health.

The collection includes packaging foods, care products, and many other items you use every day. While some are edible, some compostable, and some dissolve in water — they all disappear back into nature without any harmful traces.

Convenience that doesn’t cost the world

This simple food container is carefully engineered to eliminate waste and make the planet a healthier place. Where conventional containers have petrol-based coatings that stick around forever, this one has a 100% natural seaweed coating. Once finished, the whole package can be composted and disappears without a trace - just like a fruit peel.

Sourced sustainably, disappears naturally

From the forests below the sea comes the greatest ally in making this innovation: Seaweed grows quickly, and needs no freshwater, land or fertiliser. It captures carbon and makes the surrounding waters less acidic. Seaweed forests are biodiverse, and can even filter out pollution from human activities. The more we grow of it, the better the effect.

And the best part: worms, fungi and microbes love it. Instead of toxic waste, the containers become food for other living organisms.

All the features you need, plus a little extra for the Earth

Notpla’s packaging has been put to the test by over 3.5 million consumers, proving to be as robust and reliable as the food packaging we’re all used to, but without any of the side-effects. The unique seaweed coating creates a barrier to oil and grease, ensuring leak-free transport and use for a whole range of our favourite foods and takeaways meals. When you’re done, Notpla can be recycled in standard, kerbside paper recycling and will disappear naturally in compost, giving back to the natural systems that created it.
